About
Ruby Rose is a child soldier even by the standards of a world that sees child soldiers as normal. Remnant is a world overrun by monsters called Grimm that threaten humanity's very existence, and people like Ruby are trained to be Huntsmen to protect humanity's few major settlements. Or, in Ruby's case, to try and stop the immortal witch who has been trying to end the world for the last several millennia. Following in the footsteps of her mother and the rest of her family, Ruby has become the de facto leader of these efforts at only 16-17 years old.
These days, trying to find a balance between the burden on her shoulders and who she wants to be is harder than ever. Her mental health has reached an absolute low, and she's no longer sure who the person she wants to be even is. Accepting the deal to come to Pumpkin Hollow is a choice that bodes well for her recovery, but it's still a long road ahead.

Personality
Ruby is a sweet, energetic and often extremely socially awkward girl who hides the pain she's feeling behind a cheerful exterior for as long as possible. She's aggressively hopeful and optimistic, often to a fault, and tries to boost other people whenever she can. She's known for inspiring speeches and emotional intelligence that only goes as far as helping others and not herself—"I don't have time for my emotions. I've gotta make sure that everybody else is okay," is a way of life, for her. So long as she keeps moving, she doesn't have to examine her own issues, all neatly compartmentalised into boxes.
She can come across as naïve in her idealism, and perhaps sometimes she is, but she's a very intelligent girl who is also willing to be extremely pragmatic when it comes to combat situations. Whilst she will absolutely give people she thinks might listen a chance to change their minds, stop fighting, she won't hesitate to fight until the end if you're a threat to the world or people she cares about. Do not mistake her hope for weakness.

Appearance
5'4" biracial Asian girl, with black-scarlet ombre hair that's now grown out long enough to make a ponytail or braid. She has one startlingly silver eye—not grey, silver, a distinction that's obvious to anyone that looks closely enough, especially thanks to the energy behind them. Her right eye is completely gone, and the empty socket is most often covered by an eyepatch. She has no scars, despite her line of work.

Powers
Aura: A manifestation of the soul that acts as a personal forcefield, represented by a red energy field that shows up primarily when it's about to break. It protects her from 99% of injury until it's depleted, at which point she's vulnerable until it recharges, but does not stop her feeling hits or getting knocked around by forces. It has limited healing capacity, so long as it's up, as well as a limited extrasensory function as a danger detector.
Semblance: Petal Burst, allows her to move at high speed whilst turning into a blur of red that leaves red petals behind. She can carry other people in this state, and the effect will take on some of that person's associated colour too, as well as seemingly split herself into multiple pieces to move around obstacles and reform on the other side—though, if the object is unexpected, it can disrupt it. What actually happens is she's able to disassemble herself (and any passengers) at a molecular level and reassemble at a chosen location. She can actually carry up to four people, but doesn't know that yet.
Silver Eyes: The ability to manifest blinding streams of silver light, that vaguely resemble wings, from her eyes. This is an ability that, at home, only works on and around Grimm. Being able to use it on command relies on her being able to focus on the desire to protect life, but it can also trigger unexpectedly during highly emotional moments. Little does she know that one of her empty parcels was the ability for her eyes to target people associated with death or dark magic, though only enough to temporarily freeze them and cause them some pain.
Bird Form: Acquired via a regain. Ruby can transform into three different corvids: a Steller's Jay, a Jackdaw and a Hooded Crow (the former two having unnatural red colouration). This leaves a single black feather every time she transforms. She can't actually pick which she turns into each time, it's random.
Contracts of Elements, Plants: Cloak of the Elements; protection from harmful plants, including by natural unprocessed poisons. Armor of the Element’s Fury; allows her to create protective elemental armour of a sort, usually in the form of growing thorns. Control Elements; the ability to reshape or manipulate plants around her. Calling the Element; the ability to summon or beckon manifestations of plants. Become the Primal Foundation; the ability to become the element, in various forms ranging from hardy to malleable. All of these Contracts draw on her Aura in place of glamour, and so tax her similarly to using her Semblance.

History
Ruby was born on the island of Patch, off the coast of the Kingdom of Vale, to Summer Rose and Taiyang Xiao Long. A modest cabin home in the middle of a relatively safe patch of forest, Ruby has an almost idyllic childhood... for the years she can't remember. Summer Rose, Taiyang's second partner after her half-sister Yang's mother left, left on a mission one day and never came back. No one knows what happened to her. Ruby was barely old enough to talk when this happened and thus has very scant memories of her mother; what she does remember are little things, like hiding under her cloak or her reading stories at bedtime. After her disappearance, things changed at home; Taiyang became so depressed that Yang did as much to raise Ruby as he did for a few years, with their Uncle Qrow dropping in when he could. They got by, but money was often scarce.
Ruby grew up with a very romanticised view of... a lot of things. Her mother. Her uncle. Being a huntress. She loved fairy tales and heroes and wanted to be like them, and she put her heart and soul into becoming a good fighter and a master engineer. Her aura was activated before she turned 10 and her Semblance first showed itself in training with Qrow not all that long after. Qrow taught her how to fight with a scythe and she excelled at it. She started making plans for Crescent Rose before she even went to Combat School and would have built her in record time if not for the limitations of classes. She was a star student. By 15, she caught the eye of Professor Ozpin, headmaster of Beacon Academy and, unbeknownst to her, ancient wizard who had already drawn her family into an ancient war back before she was even born. Her interference in a robbery at a dust store led to him taking note of her having inherited her mother's silver eyes and she was boosted two years into Beacon academy.
From there, Ruby's life really took a turn. She was made leader of Team RWBY, which was only the start of the unexpected pressures that would begin to plague her in the coming years. Various incidents during their first few months at Beacon all came together during the Vytal festival, a tournament meant to celebrate the unity between the kingdoms, when Salem's forces finally moved to outright attack formation. Ruby watched her friends Penny and Pyrrha die within the span of a couple of hours, at most. Ruby tried to save them both and failed, both times. Ruby went home with her sister who'd lost an arm, knowing that her friends Blake and Weiss had either vanished, in the case of the former, or been sent back to a terrible home life, in the case of the latter. Ruby found out that she had the power of a Silver Eyed Warrior, that she was special, and at only 16 chose to run away from home to head for another kingdom in an attempt to make a difference.
Many things happened over the next year and few months. Many fights. Many revelations. Salem can't be killed. Ozpin is in the head of a 15 y/o farm hand. Ozpin's inner circle cannot all be trusted, anymore. Ruby and friends finally made it to Atlas mere weeks before she arrived on the boat and despite their best efforts, everything fell apart all like everywhere before it. Ironwood cannot be trusted. Salem is at the edge of the kingdom with a giant whale Grimm. Penny is alive again, and has the power of the Winter Maiden, but Ironwood wants her back on his side. Ruby and Yang disagree about the best course of action. Ruby learned that her mother met Salem and assumedly died at her hand. No one really knows what to do. The fight is no longer just on their doorstep, it's battering down the door, and Ruby has no idea how it's going to end.
Then, the Serena Eterna. Ruby spent just under two years on the astral cruise ship, where enough traumatising things happened that even she could no longer keep pretending she was completely, totally fine despite it all. Over those two years she learned to open up or ask for help a little more easily, how to be angry on her own behalf, started coming into her own identity, and began work on the idea that the whole world isn't on her shoulders alone. She made new friends, claimed an expanded family, and started growing into her own as a young woman. Until that, too, ended, and Ruby found herself back home for just long enough for everything in Atlas to completely fall to pieces. The last thingRuby knew, all her plans had failed, none of her risks had paid off, and she'd ended up stuck in the mythical Ever After, feeling worse and worse about her mistakes until she finally tries to unmake herself.
